Surfing

Surfing is synonymous with Byron Bay, and the breaks around the town are both popular and friendly. Vibrant with surf stores, surf schools, surf camps, surfboard makers and surfers, the culture of surfing has had an unmistakable impact on the colour of the town. With mild weather even in the winter, most of the year you can surf just in swimmers or boardshorts. The waves in are consistent and there are a number of world-famous surf breaks in the area. To get the Byron Bay surf report, just listen to the locals as the swell, tides and wind are always a topic of discussion!

One popular surf spot with consistent waves is The Pass, which is located only 2km drive from the town centre along the road to the Cape Lighthouse. A little further along the same road and around the headland are the peeling waves of Wategos Beach, which is a famous surf break for longboarding.

No matter where your accommodation is, you will never be far from a surfing beach.  There are families who come back year after year to take advantage of the large number of beaches for their annual surf vacation, so if you are a beginner then this is the perfect place to take that first surfing lesson. Join the Byron Bay Surf School and find out what you have been missing out on.
